2016 Nissan Maxima2016 Nissan Maxima

Billed as a “4-door sports car,” Nissan’s hoping that its new Maxima can help revive the large sedan segment in the same fashion that the Ford Fusion helped revitalize the midsize one.

At first glance, the Maxima has a pretty good shot at doing so. The car looks very similar to the Sport Sedan concept that Nissan introduced at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit. It aims to live up to that claim by sporting a 300 horsepower 3.5 liter V6, emphasized by a new lighter and more rigid chassis. Compared with the previous 3.5 liter V6, the new VQ-Series sports 60 percent new parts versus the outgoing unit, and Nissan estimates that it’s good for a 15 percent kick in fuel economy.

This is paired with a new performance-oriented Xtronic transmission, which uses a wider ratio range and allows for stronger acceleration from a standing start, Nissan said. It added that an all-new D-Step shifting logic is installed, which provides more “rapid shifts at high throttle openings.” All said and done, Nissan expects the Maxima’s powertrain to yield and EPA-estimated 30 miles per gallon.

The inside is as striking as the outside. Nissan took special care to outfit the Maxima with a fit-and-finish that would help justify its $32,410 starting price, and it doesn’t disappoint. The cabin boasts an upscale layout that can be had in five trims, all of which come standard with NissanConnect with navigation, an eight-inch touch-screen display, Remote Engine Start, RearView Monitor, and more, the company says.

2016 chevrolet malibu rear2016 Chevrolet Malibu

Three years after its last rework, the Chevrolet Malibu has been completely re-engineered to deliver what it was lacking — some semblance of style, rear seat room and a true hybrid model. The previous generations used a simple mild hybrid system that really only helped to spin the engine up to speed.

The reworked 2016 Malibu earns a sharp new style and now rides on a revised version of GM’s Epsilon platform. The new structure brings 100 millimetres more cabin space, which equates to a much more user-friendly back seat. It is also 135-kilograms lighter in spite of being visibly larger.

An all-new 1.5L Ecotec turbocharged engine that’s mated to a six-speed automatic now powers the base car. Next up is a 2.0L turbocharged four-cylinder teamed with Chevrolet’s first eight-speed transmission. The bigger news is the new hybrid powertrain — it was essentially lifted from the Chevy Volt, but it uses a smaller 1.5 kilowatt/hour lithium-ion battery.

The more significant change is found in the gasoline side. The Volt’s 1.5-litre goes away in favour of a larger 1.8L engine and works with the Volt’s two-motor drive unit.

2016 Lexus RX 2016 Lexus RX

Lexus completely updated its best-selling vehicle with the all-new 2016 Lexus RX, which made its debut Wednesday at the 2015 New York International Auto Show. As the top seller for Lexus, the RX has sold 2.1 million units globally, representing three out of 10 vehicles ever sold in the Toyota Motor Corporation luxury brand's 26-year history.

The RX gets a new aerodynamic look, an updated engine and a more spacious and luxurious interior. The sleeker outside makes the SUV quieter and more sure-footed at highway speeds, according to Lexus. The company says it upgraded the 3.5-Liter V6, pushing horsepower from 270 to 300.

A new eight-speed automatic transmission boosts gas mileage. Lexus sold more than 107,000 RXs last year, up 3.4 percent from a year ago. The new RX goes on sale late this year. Pricing and fuel economy were not announced, but the RX 350 now starts around $41,000.

2016 Honda Civic Concept2016 Honda Civic

For the first time, Honda let its U.S. design team take the lead on the popular compact Civic, and the result is a new low-riding coupe that should appeal to buyers both in the U.S. and elsewhere.

The top-to-bottom redesign concept includes dramatic creases, a short hood and LED tail and headlights. The sedan version will be in showrooms this fall, with a coupe, hatchback and a high-performance R-Type coming later.

Honda provided more than a glimpse of where it is going with the next-generation Civic's styling, divulging some detail about what will be under the hood and behind the new "Flying H" grille design. Honda says that the new Civic will be offered with a turbocharged, direct-injection, 1.5-liter 4-cylinder engine. Transmission choices will include a 6-speed manual gearbox and a new continuously variable transmission.

Honda last rolled out an all-new Civic in 2011, and it was widely panned for its bland styling, cabin noise and pedestrian handling. It was quickly updated in 2012.

2016 Cadillac CT62016 Cadillac CT6

Cadillac unveiled its all-new flagship sedan, the 2016 CT6, Tuesday at the New York International Auto Show. In a press release, Cadillac notes that the CT6 is one of eight new vehicles the brand will launch by the end of the decade.

According to Cadillac, the all-new CT6 is comparable in size to the short-wheelbase BMW 7-Series but lighter than the 5-Series, which competes more directly with the recently redesigned Cadillac CTS. The CT6 comes standard with rear-wheel drive and a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that makes 265 horsepower.

There are two optional V6 engines: a 3.6-liter V6 that makes 335 horsepower and a twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter V6 that produces 400 horsepower. An eight-speed automatic transmission is standard with all engines, and V6 models come standard with all-wheel drive.

Although Cadillac hasn't specified which features are standard or optional, the 2016 CT6 gets a 10.2-inch touch screen through which you can control the CUE infotainment system, as well as OnStar 4G LTE with an integrated Wi-Fi hot spot, wireless phone charging, a rearview camera with its display integrated into the rearview mirror, night vision (which detects people or large animals by their heat signatures and identifies them to the driver), pedestrian detection with automatic braking and a 360-degree camera system. Other features include power-adjustable and massaging rear seats and a 34-speaker Bose audio system.
