Climate affects your vehicle in more ways than you can imagine from performance to safety.

7 Tips to Winterize Your Car!

Battery

You can prepare your battery for an extreme winter season is by having your battery tested and, in some instances, replaced.

Battery

To maintain your battery through the harsh temperatures, you should try parking in a garage or purchase a battery warmer.

Windshield Wipers

Ice scrapers definitely come in handy during this time, however, you should also maintain your windshield wipers which have some do’s, don’ts and a few suggestions.

Fuel

As a precautionary measure, try to keep your fuel tank or charge as full as possible. This way, if you do happen to get stranded, you’ll at least be able to make use of the heating system and stay warm.

Snow Tires & Air Pressure

The tires on your car are extremely sensitive to weather conditions, including their grooves and air pressure.

Having snow tires on your car during the winter season can enhance your vehicle’s performance and keep you safe on icy roads.

*Bonus: if you purchase your winter tires during the summer months, they may be cheaper.

Other than tire type, air pressure is a big factor because having too much or too little can be dangerous.

You can expect about one drop in your air pressure for every ten-degree drop in temperature.

While newer cars typically have an air pressure warning light on the dashboard, older cars might not which means that you would have to manually and regularly check the air pressure.

Whether you drive a new or old vehicle, it wouldn’t hurt to keep a portable air pressure and gauge in your car at all time.

Antifreeze

AntifreezeAntifreeze helps regulate your car’s cooling system and prevent it from rusting. However, you don’t want to have too much or too little antifreeze in your vehicle.

Having 100% coolant in your radiator inhibits the transfer of heat away from its engine and can cause melted spark plugs or even engine failure.

The following table shows antifreeze mixtures & measurements.

Lights

Not many people are concerned over their lighting systems during the winter months, but they play an important role for the driver’s visibility especially in snowing and foggy conditions.

One way to keep your headlights dirt free and reduce icicle buildup is by rubbing car wax over the headlight lenses.
